Hineleban Participates in the 13th National Watershed Conference

Bacolod City: The 13th National Watershed Conference was held in Bacolod, Negros Occidental on 23-25 April 2018. This year the theme of the conference was “Strengthening Watersheds Ecosystem for Climate Resiliency with Payment for Ecosystem Services”. Some 200 participants attended the conference representing all regions of the Philippines. Region 10 had the largest delegation and included the Talaandig Republic band who performed Indigenous songs from Bukidnon. Hineleban Chairman and CEO Urooj Malik, shown in the photograph, presented in the plenary session on the first morning of the conference. He highlighted the experience of Hineleban in ecosystem conservation through the provision of sustainable livelihood development. He also emphasised the vital need by stakeholders to recognise the customary rights, practices and processes of the Indigenous Tribes – the original custodians of forests and ecosystems, and the respect for their Native Title Right. The conference culminated with a series of policy recommendations for the implementation of appropriate mechanisms to strengthen watersheds ecosystem for climate resiliency.
